Home Invasion Crime Prevention
Section One
Shrubs & General Information
Across the country Home Invasions & Break-Ins are on the rise. The best defense is to safeguard your home against Break-Ins for the protection of your family and valuables. Take a pro-active approach to all of the methods used by would be criminals to have them bypass your home as a target.
All the information gathered in this article was done by personally interviewing police officers in robbery units and their recommendations from personal experiences and interrogations from actual criminals.
SHRUBS
- Your shrubs in front of your house should not grow past your window (so you can see out).
- A burglar can work on your window for a long period of time without being seen.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- If you have an alarm - Set it!
- All ladders in your yard should be chained down so they are not used to gain entry to the second floor.
- Your house number should be well lit so responding police can easily see it.
- Know what goes on in your neighborhood and know your neighbors’ cars. If you think that something is suspicious then it is and don’t hesitate to call the police.
- Speak to neighbors when going away on vacation. Accumulating newspapers in front of the house is a calling card for a criminal.
Please Note: One criminal with over 40 break-ins would ride his bike through the neighborhood and if the newspaper was still on the front lawn at night he knew no one was home.
- UPS and delivery stickers left on the door are a red flag….If they are left there at night.
- Sometimes burglars follow people around and become familiar with their schedule (they know how many people live in a house and what time they go and come back...so if you see anybody suspicious, just call the police and let them investigate).
- A barking dog—whether yours or your neighbors, should always be investigated. They usually go off before the alarm!
