Child Safety & Awareness - #7

Child Abduction Prevention Checklist
Part 2

  • TEACH YOUR CHILD TO STICK TO YOU LIKE GLUE: Establish rules for when you go to the mall, park, or other public place. Make sure your child knows what to do if they are separated from you. Teach your child to travel in groups of two or more—all the time.
  • A CHILD MUST ALWAYS BE WATCHED OVER: Don’t drop off children at malls, movies, video arcades or parks. These places are not safe for children to be alone. Make certain that a responsible adult supervises your younger children at all times when they are outside and away from home.
  • SECRET FAMILY CODE WORD: Teach your child a secret family codeword, only to be used in emergency situations. Even if your child is approached by an adult with your codeword, they can be taught to seek out another adult (policeman, teacher, Mom/Dad with kids) to help them verify before leaving anywhere with the “code word safe” adult.
  • INTERNET SAFETY: Set ground rules for computer use. Computers and online services are great learning tools but bad babysitters. Teach your children to never give out any type of personal information over the Internet.
  • MONITOR YOUR CHILD’S COMPUTER ACTIVITY: Install software to monitor: email, instant messaging, chats, websites visited, and keystrokes.
  • CONTINUE YOUR ONGOING EDUCATION ON YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY: The following are important Child Protection websites for information and safety tools:
